Global Lessons on Greening School Grounds and Outdoor Learning

Cameroon | Green Cameroon

Green Cameroon is a non-governmental organization in Buea, in the South-West Region of Cameroon, that works with children and youth to develop deep connections to nature and aid in the protection of the environment and conservation of biodiversity. One way they do so is through the creation and support of environmental clubs in primary, secondary and high schools. Since 2006, they have supported the development of more than 100 environmental clubs in the region. By equipping children and youth with the knowledge and abilities needed to be good environmental stewards, Green Cameroon hopes they will grow up to make critical decisions that further the conservation of nature and advance sustainable development.

“Investing in youths is investing in the future,” says H.M. Chief Masango S. Sone, Founder and Executive Director of Green Cameroon. “Sustainable development can only be achieved if we train our children to understand the relationship between their happiness and the state of the environment. It is only when they realize that there would be no true happiness without a conducive environment that they can be motivated to take and play active roles towards the conservation of nature.”

Key Aspects of the Case Study

  • Climate resilience. Green Cameroon’s projects center on sustainable land management practices to address issues such as drought, desertification, floods and erosion.
  • Capacity building. Students, teachers and community members build capacity by learning about resilience techniques and alternative energy sources and becoming active citizens in their community.
  • Community. The environmental projects bring together community members to work alongside school children on activities such as school gardens, tree planting and river clean-ups to improve living standards and protect natural resources.
  • Education. Green Cameroon initiated and championed the creation of a UN Regional Centre of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development under the name “RCE Buea.”

Our youth and children are very creative. They can do many things beyond our expectations but we have to give them that opportunity. We have to create that conducive environment that permits them to express themselves in their own way,” says Founder and Executive Director Masango Sone.

The activities in Green Cameroon’s environmental clubs include hands-on projects like planting and raising trees, flower gardens and fruit orchards; community clean-ups; proper waste disposal and recycling activities. The clubs also engage students in theatrical performances depicting local environmental issues.
