Spotlight on Milwaukee:
Green Schoolyards
Pre-Conference Tour

On May 28, 2024, the Children & Nature Network welcomed more than 60 attendees from across the United States — and around the world — to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for the Green Schoolyards Pre-Conference Tour. The attendees represented school districts, city agencies and nonprofits all interested in growing green and healthy school initiatives in their cities.

As part of the tour, attendees spent the day hearing directly from environmental nonprofit Reflo and Milwaukee area partners about how they scaled their model to redevelop greener, healthier schoolyards, with an emphasis on green stormwater infrastructure.

Reflo works with five Milwaukee-area schools per year in an intensive, collaborative process to design greener, healthier schoolyards. Each project is tailored to the specific needs and enthusiasm of the school’s community but often involves replacing seas of asphalt with green spaces including bioswales, cisterns and trees.
