

Reaching Youth’s Full Potential – Youth Development & Nature

Intentional integration of youth development with nature experiences amplifies the benefits of each and produces new outcomes for youth to reach their full potential. Join C&NN to explore effective practices to map your organization’s progress toward achieving positive youth development outcomes through quality nature engagement. Participants will be eligible for the C&NN Youth Development & Nature Cohort, a six-month engagement that includes planning, funding, and implementation of nature-based activities.
Topics for workshop discussion include:
- A framework that illustrates the intersection of youth development and nature for organizations
- Evidence-based research on the benefits of youth development and nature connection
- Strategies for delivering quality youth development and nature-based learning and programming
- Outline of the technical assistance, pass-through grants, and peer learning opportunities available through the Youth Development & Nature Cohort

Cathy Jordan,
Consulting Director of Research, Children & Nature Network
Cathy Jordan, Ph.D., is a pediatric neuropsychologist by training. She has spent her career at the University of Minnesota and is currently a Professor of Pediatrics and Director of Leadership and Education at the Institute on the Environment. Cathy combines her expertise in child health and development, research, and science communication to lead C&NN’s efforts to analyze research on the benefits of nature and to activate research findings for application by the children and nature movement. She brings her passion for sustainability and planetary health to her role at C&NN, and her passion for connecting children to nature to her environmental leadership work at the Institute on the Environment. Cathy holds a doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Wayne State University. She lives in Minneapolis, MN where she enjoys paddling, hiking, shape note singing and watching her amazing outdoorsy kids grow into amazing outdoorsy adults.

Monica Lopez Magee,
Director of Cities and Community Engagement, Children & Nature Network
Monica Lopez Magee helps city and community leaders develop programs, policies, and partnerships to provide children and families access to nature and its many health and academic benefits. She draws upon her master’s degree in Public Leadership from the LBJ School of Public Affairs, undergraduate studies in environmental science, a decade leading and facilitating youth and family programs in New York City and Houston, TX, and her cultural heritage to create nature-based solutions that prioritize communities of color, transform public spaces, and foster love and stewardship of the natural world. Her dedication to the outdoors carries into her personal life where she serves on an Austin, TX independent school district advisory committee, enjoys gardening, and volunteers with her family.
